Transformative Learning and Student Empowerment: Zimbabwean Graduate Students' Immersion into United States Higher Education
Banda, Emmanuel

2014, Doctor of Philosophy, Miami University, Educational Leadership.
This dissertation explores the transformative learning experiences of Zimbabwean graduate students studying in American higher education and the meanings they impute to their experiences. Anchored within a critically oriented and emancipatory epistemology, this qualitative research study develops depth of understanding on how seven participants sustained or changed their perceptions about themselves, others, and the world around them. A deeper understanding of transformative learning involves an exploration of four fundamental questions: How did Zimbabwean graduate students describe their educational experiences in both the Zimbabwean and American higher education systems? What meanings did participants impute on their lived experiences in two disparate academic and social cultures? In what ways were their experiences in American graduate schools transformative? What was the impact of the transformative learning experiences on participants?
Major themes that emerged from participants’ educational experiences in Zimbabwe include personal autonomy and growth, hardship, disempowerment and silencing, culture and socialization, and yearning for freedom. Narratives on educational experiences in the United States generated four themes: new awakening, personal transformation, exploitation and prejudice, and utopian vision and social responsibility. Findings from this study provide a guide for progressive educators and policymakers who desire to create empowering educational settings that go beyond mere informational learning. The study also raises pertinent issues that warrant the attention of American educators and legislators on how to enrich and improve the educational and social experiences of international students.
