Blind Adaptive Beamforming for GNSS Receivers

Adaptive antenna arrays provide state-of-the-art radio frequency interference protection to global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) in challenging signal environments. In addition to steering nulls in the directions of the interference signals, adaptive arrays which have the capabilities to point beams along the satellite signal direction provide even more robust signal protection. However, conventional beamforming techniques require the knowledge of the desired signal direction and also the in situ antenna array manifold, which may be hard to obtain with enough accuracy. Recently blind adaptive beamformers have gained significant interest because these beamformers do not need the above mentioned information. However, current works on blind adaptive beamformers for GNSS receivers focus on metrics in terms of signal quality (e.g. signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR), carrier-to-noise-ratio (C/N0)). These current works no not consider the effects of the blind adaptive beamformer on the accuracy of GNSS receiver measurements, namely the code delay and carrier phase, which can significantly degrade the final navigation solutions. This work extends the understanding of performances of blind adaptive beamformers for GNSS receivers, specifically blind beamformers based on the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) algorithm. First, the drawbacks of the MMSE algorithm, in terms of code delay and carrier phase biases, are studied in detailed. Second, solutions are proposed such that the code delay bias and carrier phase bias performances are comparable to the baseline of conventional beamforming. These solutions are based on modifications to the standard MMSE algorithm. Finally, experimental results are presented, verifying the performance of our proposed blind adaptive beamformer for GNSS receivers.
