The Effect of Intermediate Advection on Two Competing Species

We study the dynamics of two competing species in a spatially heterogeneous
but temporally constant habitat.
Two species are assumed to have the same competitive ability but
different dispersal strategies:
one species disperses by random movement, while
the other species adopts a combination of random movement and
advection upward along the resource gradient.
Previous works show that if there is no advection
or the advection rate is small,
the dynamics of this two-species competition system is driven
by the difference between two random movement rates.
More specifically, the species with the slower random movement
rate will drive the other species to extinction.
On the other hand, it was shown that
if the advection rate is sufficiently large,
both species can invade when rare and
they can coexist. This left a gap between small and large
advection. Since the dynamics of the system
for small and large advection are so different, the transition between these
two parameter regions is likely complex and interesting. The goal
of this thesis is to
understand the effect of
intermediate advection on the dynamics of this two-species competition system.
One of our main results provides a concrete range of advection strength for the coexistence of
two competing species. Our results on the local stability of
two semi-trivial steady states not only shed deeper insight into the invasion of
species, but also
illustrate three different kinds of transitions
from small advection to large advection.
Our numerical results strongly support predictions
based upon our analytical results.
