Methods to relieve the north of China’s water scarcity issue – The South-North Water Project and desalination

Water will become one of the most pressing global issues in the 21st century. Global population growth and continued economic development place great strains on water supply. This has resulted in higher pollution levels in many major rivers and lakes, making water unsafe for human consumption. Many counties are currently considering new technologies and methods to both increase supply and control demand.
China is one of the world’s most water rich countries, however, in terms of water usage per capita they are water scarce. This is particularly severe in the arid north of China, where rapid economic development has lowered water tables to unsustainable levels. To combat this issue, China is constructing the South-North Water Project to meet the demand of many northern cities. The South-North Water Project has received great amounts of attention, as it is the world’s largest water diversion project. Issues confronting the project include: its potential impact on southern China’s environment, water not meeting drinking standards, and cost of the project. This has forced the project deadline to be delayed multiple times, leading many northern cities to consider new water strategies. Desalination, due to its decreasing cost and high quality of water, is becoming a viable solution for many coastal cities in the north.
This paper examines both the South-North Water Project and desalination as means to solve the water scarcity issue in the north of China. Because desalination is more cost effective, has less impact on the environment, and produces high quality water, desalination should serve as a major supplement for both the East and Middle line. The author believes the West line – which has not begun construction – should be abandoned, using these funds to invest in desalination.
