Notes between Yesterday and Tomorrow: Queering Perceptions toward Homotopia
Joyce, Nicholas

2011, BFA, Kent State University, College of the Arts / School of Art.

This thesis began as an investigation into a variety of current architectural practices exploring new approaches to “design thinking.” The work of William McDonough and his unique definition and proposal of sustainability – as something done for all children, of all species, for all time – posed a new practice within the field of “green” architecture. Within his book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things, notions of Marxist theory began to present themselves and this aimed my research in a new direction. Under the guidance of Kevin Floyd, professor of English at Kent State University and author of many publications including his book, The Reification of Desire: Toward a Queer Marxism, I became intently focused on both Marxist theory as well as queer theory. Queer theory sets out to recontextualize any topic grounded in sexual definition as well as any subject within any context related to that of a “heteronormative” viewpoint. One of my first readings suggested that queer theory was about to become a new type of topical subjectivity and another suggested that queer theory itself needed to “queer” its own perspective. These ideas fascinated me and became integral in my sculptural practice. Notions of redefining and contextualizing both individual and communal identities became the focus of my thought. This thesis is organized, not only by chapters, but also by timestamps. My sculptural work address video as well as time and the structure of the thesis provided a type of manifestation of these subjects. Two versions of this thesis are printed – one is written in the most readerly order while the other abides by the structure of time and begins to confuse the writing. This is a very pointed experiment as I am continuing to question how perception enacts itself.
