  • 2. Waisner, Cynthia Through the Eyes of the Family: A Collective Case Study of Family Business Consulting

Ph.D., Antioch University, 2012, Leadership and Change

Interest in family businesses has increased over the last 50 years. Little empirical research, however, has been devoted specifically to the study of family business consulting. Various practitioners have offered their insights regarding approaches and tools, and a few empirical studies have offered the practitioners' viewpoints regarding the practice area. The purpose of this study was to add to this small body of research by providing a view of family business consulting through the lens of the family business member. The chosen method of inquiry was collective case study, to allow for both contextual understanding and cross-case comparison. A total of nine participants across three cases were involved in the study. Several primary themes emerged from the study. To be considered a family business consultant by family members, a consultant needed to have entered the family business system through the family portal. The work of family business consultants was focused on inter-generational issues. Factors important to a successful consultation included chemistry with the family business leader, trust, values, and the involvement of non-business spouses. Finally, family members identified the maintenance of intact family member relationships as an important component of success in a family business consultation. Themes suggested by this study both supported and extended findings exploring family business consulting from the practitioner's point of view. • 3. Farley-Smith, Kimberly Introducing the Consulting Triadic Supervision Model (CTSM): A Qualitative Study Exploring the Impact of the Innovative Model on School Counselor Professional Identity

PhD, University of Cincinnati, 2024, Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services: Counselor Education

The professional identity of school counselors is an essential aspect of the profession as it guides them in their decision-making and helps define their role within the school system. Supervision presents an opportunity for school counselors to augment and refine their competencies in addressing the evolving and developmental necessities of pre-K-12th grade students (American School Counseling Association [ASCA], 2022b). Part of the supervision experience also includes how supervisees process and develop their professional identity. Navigating the intricacies of professional identity is a critical component of the supervision process, as it requires careful consideration of the challenges and nuances inherent in the field. However, maintaining a professional identity can be challenging given the complexities and dynamic nature of the profession. The purpose of this study was two-fold. First, to provide a comprehensive overview of the research on school counselor supervision and professional identity development, including the identification of the gaps in the current body of literature to address the ongoing needs in the field of school counseling supervision. The study introduced readers to a novel and innovative school counselor supervision model, the Consulting Triadic Supervision Model (CTSM). Secondly, this study sought to investigate the impact of that model on school counselors' professional identity by exploring their experiences after participating in the CTSM. The results indicated a significant enhancement in PSCI development following their participation in the CTSM. The results revealed six themes included (1) Say Yes – to CTSM, which included three sub-themes of (a) feeling new and (b) still developing, (c) mentoring, (2) School Counseling is a Culture, (3) CTSM - The Bi-directional Benefits of Supervision, (4) Triadic Supervision Synergy, with two sub-themes of (a) the Heart of PSCI and (b) cultivation of PSCI, (5) Bridging theory to practice, with t (open full item for complete abstract)

  • 4. Bizzotto Magalhaes Garcia, Rafael International Market Assessment and Entry – United States' Fast Casual Firm Entering the Brazilian Food Market

Master of Arts (MA), Ohio University, 2019, Latin American Studies (International Studies)

This thesis strives to analyze the fast casual food market in order to understand if Chipotle would be successful in Brazil and what the concerns would be if the American chain decides to internationalize its operation to Brazil. This thesis has developed as a prospective case study based mainly on business and cultural analysis. The study analyzed Brazil by using the theory of market assessment, and also analyzed the fast casual, fast food, and food service industries and products by applying other business theories such as PESTEL, Porter Five Forces and VRIO. Furthermore, the study interviewed one entrepreneur in the fast casual industry in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil to understand the local industry dynamics. Regarding all the information analyzed, this thesis creates a business model that consists on explaining how Chipotle would operate in the country. Brazil is an attractive market for Chipotle, there is room for rapid growth, and Chipotle could provide a positive impact for Brazilians.

  • 5. Hamilton, Julia INDOOR AIR QUALITY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING: MY INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE AS AN AIR MONITOR FOR NOVA ENVIRONMENTAL, INC.

Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, 2018, Environmental Sciences

This report summarizes my duties as an Environmental Consultant at Nova Environmental, Inc. in Ann Arbor, Michigan. My main responsibilities included monitoring the air quality on construction sites where asbestos removal was taking place. If airborne, asbestos fibers can be very dangerous to human health and are known to be linked to lung diseases and cancers. Due to this, asbestos containing materials need to be removed from buildings before construction or renovations occur. Several steps need to be taken to ensure that asbestos is removed safely at a job site. When on a construction site, there are several laws and regulations in place regarding asbestos removal as well as worker safety. This internship experience and my time at the Master of Environmental Science program through the Institute for the Environment and Sustainability at Miami University are described in the report.

  • 9. Rahtz, Christine Finding a Balance: The Intersection of Transportation Needs and Environmental Regulation and Protection

Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, 2014, Environmental Sciences

An environmental consultant is responsible for understanding both the scientific and the regulatory aspects of every project, and ensuring that the client is in compliance with the law. For transportation projects, this involves finding a balance between the transportation needs of the public and the protection of valuable environmental assets, which can both be considered shared resources. This paper describes the relevant laws and regulations, permitting processes, field methods and reporting associated with Ohio Department of Transportation projects completed during a six-month internship at a private consulting firm in Columbus, Ohio. Three case studies are used to illustrate the application of various environmental protocols.

  • 10. Manley, Lucy Embedding the Consultant: A NNES Case Study

Master of Arts, Miami University, 2014, English

This thesis is a teacher-research case study assessing the effectiveness of an embedded writing center consultant in a nonnative English speaking classroom using a qualitative methodology with data collected from surveys, interviews, student writing samples, and field notes. The results show participants' overall positive reaction to the embedded consultant program. The embedded consultant facilitated student learning and acted as a cultural informant in the class. The ways the NNES students talked about their writing (as modeled by the embedded consultant) proved to increase the quality of writing produced and a better understanding and engagement with the writing process. Following perspectives of the program from all case participants: students, embedded consultant, and instructor, the thesis concludes with recommendations for embedding a writing consultant in an NNES only classroom.

  • 11. Wells, Marion FOUR DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING PROJECTS IN OHIO: THE SIMILARITY OF STREAM AND WETLAND ASSESSMENTS AND DIFFERENCES IN REGULATIONS

Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, 2013, Environmental Sciences

Through an environmental science internship with EMH&T, a private consulting firm, I conducted various environmental consulting projects. The four main projects that I worked on included a Nationwide Permit application, Level II Isolated Wetland Permit application, Level II Ecological Survey Report, and a monitoring report. For each of these projects, I conducted the field work, entered and analyzed the data, as well as wrote and submitted the final document for the appropriate regulatory agency. All of these projects involved the same stream and wetland assessments; however, each one of them was regulated very differently. Therefore, although similar field methods were used for various projects, the rules and regulations and ultimately the final document behind a particular project can vary greatly. Every project had a different scenario with varied requirements and client needs. Regardless of the project, coordination and communication with clients, agencies, and within EMH&T were crucial.

Master of Environmental Science, Miami University, 2005, Environmental Sciences

The Institute of Environmental Sciences (IES) at Miami University has offered a Master of Environmental Science since 1969. I have completed the class work needed for a Masters Degree concentrating in ‘Resource Analysis'. The program required a practicum, internship or thesis to complete the degree. As do most IES students, I chose the internship option so that I could gain valuable hands-on experience in environmental consulting. I have always been interested in consulting work because it represented a bridge between environmentalists and developers who often entertain opposite goals. Here I could use my botanical and environmental background to ensure that developers and government entities develop the landscape within the framework of Ohio's laws. In addition, I could work with engineers at EMH&T, Inc. to minimize the effects of development upon the environment under the current laws. I completed the internship with Evans, Mechwart, Hambleton and Tilton (EMH&T) Inc. in Columbus, Ohio.
