  • 1. Daugherty, Katherine The Holy War: The History, Hype, Impact, and Legacy of the St. Edward – Saint Ignatius High School Football Rivalry

Undergraduate Honors Program, Malone University, 2023, Honors Thesis

High school football rivalries are a quintessential part of adolescence and community life, although they are not often the focus of academic scholarship. This paper seeks to fill that void. Rivalries exist throughout the United States, but of focus is one of the most storied rivalries in Ohio between two perennial football state champions: Saint Ignatius High School and St. Edward High School. Saint Ignatius High School, an all-boy Catholic high school founded in 1886, is located in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood. St. Edward High School, situated in the nearby suburb of Lakewood and founded in 1949, is the second all-boys Catholic school in this classic rivalry. In 1952, the young football program for the St. Edward Eagles faced off against the much more experienced Saint Ignatius Wildcats on the gridiron for the first time. It was the first game in the rivalry – a rivalry that would bring together what could feel like the entire West Side of Cleveland for the yearly match-up. The annual game, played at least once a year every year since 1971, creates an atmosphere of high school football that few other high school football rivalries match. Details and outcomes of the games remain vivid in the memories of players and fans alike for generations, as fathers, sons, nephews, and friends replenish collective memory banks when they take their places on the field or in the bleachers. Alumni from both schools carry their reminiscences everywhere – from local boardrooms to conversations with passers-by in a grocery store. There is a sense of pride and purpose that continues from generation to generation, and the game, the rivalry, and the storied history spills over into every area of life. The players, the fans, and alumni celebrate each year's victory and vow to avenge any loss when the next match-up is scheduled. Such is the intensity of the competitiveness that exists between the St. Edward Eagles and the Saint Ignatius Wildcats. And this rivalry is rath (open full item for complete abstract)

  • 3. Eberle, Amanda The Relationship Between Adolescents' Extracurricular Activities and Health and/or Risk Behaviors

Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.), Xavier University, 2011, Psychology

Studies on the relationship between high school students' participation in sports and structured activities and engagement in healthy and/or risky behaviors have resulted in mixed findings. In this study, students from 2 private, Catholic, single-sex high schools (N = 706) completed surveys about their participation in structured activities and health and risk behaviors. Whereas the amount of time spent participating in any type of structured activity was related to greater engagement in health behaviors and fewer risk behaviors, participation in sports (specifically) was associated with higher engagement in risk behaviors. Implications of these results in terms of sports participation as a "protective" activity in adolescence is discussed. General considerations and future research in this area are also discussed.

  • 4. Miller, Emily Nutrition Education for Female High School Athletes to Increase Sports Nutrition Knowledge

MS, University of Cincinnati, 2023, Allied Health Sciences: Nutrition

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of a six-week nutrition education intervention in increasing nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy related to nutrition behaviors in female high school athletes. Methods: A preliminary assessment of needs was distributed to a group of athletes at a local high school. Female high school athletes were recruited to participate in the nutrition intervention.. The intervention included six-weekly nutrition education sessions, each of which being one half hour in duration. The topics of the classes included energy needs, macronutrients, micronutrients, periodization, hydration, and supplement usage. Nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy related to nutrition behaviors were assessed before and after the intervention. Paired T-tests were used to examine the differences pre- to post-intervention for nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy. Results: Seventeen participants completed both the pre- and post-test. The average knowledge post-test score was 34.35. The average change in score from pre to post was +3.7 points. The post-test score was significantly higher than the pre-test score at p<0.05. The average score of the self-efficacy pre-evaluation was 4.67 points (with the highest possible score being 7 and lowest possible score being 1), and the average score of the self-efficacy post-evaluation was 5.94 points. The average change in this score was +1.24 points. The average score from the self-efficacy post-evaluation was significantly higher than that of the self-efficacy pre-evaluation at p<0.001. There were no significant differences found by grade level for self-efficacy or nutrition knowledge. Conclusion: This nutrition education intervention was shown to be effective in increasing sports nutrition knowledge and self-efficacy in this population. The short duration and flexibility of this program indicate that it would be feasible to repeat the intervention with future participants. Future inte (open full item for complete abstract)
