Factors Spanning Systemic Levels Influencing the Experiences of Asian Students in U.S. Higher Education Amid Rising Anti-Asian Racism: A Transdisciplinary Investigation

Abstract Details

2024, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Educational Studies.
My dissertation comprises three articles that utilize multi-method approaches to examine the factors spanning systemic levels influencing the experiences of Asian students in U.S. higher education, focusing on two main strands of research. Spanning the first two articles, the first strand focuses how human dynamics as opposed to organizational structure in higher education organizations can mitigate educational inequality to the benefit of both international and domestic students. One article, informed by organizational theory and behavior, uses quantitative methods to identify the external and internal stakeholders who influenced higher education institution chief executive leaders' communication decisions following the 2021 Atlanta shooting that claimed the lives of six Asian women. Another focuses on the organizational sensemaking process among higher education leaders regarding anti-Asian sentiment in the context of racial reckoning. It adopts a hermeneutic approach rooted in philosophical hermeneutics, and its data collection consisted of semi-structured individual interviews with 16 leaders in student affairs and diversity, equity and inclusion roles. The second part of my research highlights the storytelling and standpoint of Asian international students, investigating their experiences and the role that social ecologies play in supporting their resilience in the face of racism and other forms of adversity. This study uses a mixed methods research design, centering the qualitative phase. 328 Asian international students participated in the quantitative survey; 32 students participated in the semi-structured qualitative interview. Employing a transdisciplinary approach, my dissertation research illuminates structural vulnerabilities affecting Asian students' well-being and advances theoretical understanding across systems and structures. These findings have broad implications for equitable educational practices and policies.
