Abstract
The American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) and Research Council on Structural Connections (RCSC) Specifications have limited the allowable length of slotted holes for bolted connections to two and half times the bolt diameter. Whenever the slot length greater than the specified is required, they are designed outside the scope of the Specification which concerns the safety of these design. Also, North American steel design standards requires plate washers to completely cover the slots in the connection with long slotted holes in the outer plies of the joint. However, this provision lacks some details and clarity. The main purpose of this research is to study the behavior of the bolted joints with extra-long slots and to evaluate effect of parameters such as intra-slot spacing, slot length and plate washer on the behavior of these joints. Two FEA models were constructed; one for the joint with slots aligned in the transverse direction of the applied load and another for the joint with slots aligned parallel to the applied load. Several parameters such as mesh, change in bolt alignment, and change in friction that could affect the correlation between the experimental and analytical results were discussed basically aiming at obtaining reliable FEA models, calibrated against experimental results. It was observed that the FEA models were able to predict important behaviors of the connections. This study concluded that beyond the slot length limit of six times diameter of bolt, the capacity remains constant in case of the slot aligned parallel to loading whereas in case of the slot aligned transverse to the loading, with the increase in slot length greater than 6 times diameter of the bolt, the capacity goes on decreasing due to intra-slot bending. In the study of the plate washer, it was noticed that plate washers are generally not required in the joint when extra-long slots are aligned in the transverse direction of the applied load.
