The historical male domination of agriculture creates several barriers that restrain women’s participation in this field. The creation of agricultural organizations represents one of the globalized strategies to address those gender inequalities. That is why this research aimed to explore the levels of participation of women and men in agricultural associations of cacao farmers in Ecuador. A multiple-case study was conducted in four agricultural associations and qualitative and quantitative information was collected. Data was collected through questionnaires to the formal members of the associations, and semi-structured interviews to the leaders. Findings indicated that, even when efforts have been made, women’s participation is lower than men. Only in one of the associations, the President was a woman. Men in all the organizations achieved the highest level of participation (interactive) meanwhile women were distributed along the scale in passive and active levels. This situation could be related to the organizational culture of the association and its dynamics of leadership. Additionally, barriers for women’s participation were related to traditional roles and sexism. Future research should address the perception of non-formal members of the association, as well as a connection between socioeconomic variables and women’s participation and leadership dynamics in these organizations. Also, the cultural organizational factors that influence in the leadership and participation dynamics. For the organizations, more training related to leadership skills within the associations can create a welcoming space for new members to join and develop themselves.
