Abstract
Putatively maladaptive emotion regulation strategies like suppression and avoidance are associated with a variety of negative psychological outcomes, including symptoms of psychopathology. However, research suggests that relationships between these emotion regulation “control” strategies and psychopathology vary depending on racial and cultural factors. Using a cross-sectional, correlational design, we examined whether race (i.e., Black and White American) moderated the associations among emotion control strategies and symptoms of psychopathology. There were no significant racial differences in emotion control strategy use. Additionally, race did not moderate relationships between emotion control strategy use and psychopathology features. There was a small, but significant, positive correlation between race-related stress and emotion control strategy use among Black participants. Exploratory analyses revealed that relationships between emotion control strategy use and psychopathology features were stronger for participants who reported higher perceived stress. Likewise, this moderation pattern continued for Black participants who reported higher race-related stress. These results suggests that connections between habitual emotion control strategy use, and psychopathology features do not differ based on race alone.
