Abstract
This dissertation focuses on language contact phenomena of Afro-Bolivian Spanish, spoken in Los Yungas valley, a.k.a., Afro-Yungueño, and a variety of Afro-Brazilian Portuguese spoken in Helvécia (Bahia), a.k.a., Helvécia Portuguese, in order to investigate the African languages that directly contributed to their development. I concentrate on their location marking systems, given that Afro-Yungueño and Helvécia Portuguese present innovative locatives such as zero marking and the ni preposition, respectively. This research examines the relationship between the sociohistorical development of these communities and these language contact features. This work also focuses on how the role of speakers’ agency (Sicoli 2011) has affected the emergence of both language varieties. Based on historical, linguistic, and ethnographic data, the results have demonstrated that Bantu languages and Yorùbá were the main languages in contact with Spanish and Portuguese and that these languages influenced the Afro-Yungueño and Helvécia Portuguese’s location marking systems. My findings provide further evidence that these varieties were highly shaped by contact in their formation period. In sum, this dissertation brings recognition to Afro-Yungueño and Helvécia Portuguese as legitimate language varieties. It demonstrates how nuanced theoretical approaches, combining sociohistorical, linguistic, and ethnographic methods, are more appropriate to explain the origin and development of contact languages.
