Abstract
Translucency modeling algorithms used in real-time applications often incorporate object thickness; however, directionally sensitive thickness evaluation techniques are frequently too slow for real-time use and faster non-directional approximations are used. In this work, we propose a directionally sensitive surface space thickness reconstruction technique utilizing spherical harmonics. Our work can be seen as an improvement to current local-thickness based techniques. We evaluate our method’s ability to accurately approximate surface thickness and compare it to both local-thickness and more accurate far-near techniques (wherein a surface’s front and back faces are rendered and the far and near depths are subtracted). Additionally, we explore the effects of reconstruction parameters such as sampling density and order on reconstruction error and sensitivity.
