Mock Gravitational Lensing Catalog for Vera Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST)

Abstract Details

2024, Master of Science (MS), Ohio University, Physics and Astronomy (Arts and Sciences).
Gravitational lensing provides observational evidence of the general relativity prediction that massive objects such as galaxies and clusters curve spacetime. As spacetime curves, light emitted by background objects deviates and arrives at the observer at a different angle than emission. This creates distorted images of objects in the background. Significant distortions without ordinary matter present between source and observer can imply the existence of dark matter in the path of light. In absence of lensing, galaxies are randomly oriented, lensing induces a small but systematic alignment in convergence, shear and magnification. These distortions can be detected statistically by analyzing their correlations. The upcoming Vera Rubin Observatory’s Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) project is the most comprehensive effort so far in studying gravitational lensing effects. Hence, the development of a lensing catalog containing detailed data on position, convergence, magnification and shear of background objects by lensing objects is essential. While actual observations are yet to begin, some initial data has been made available from realistic N-body simulations. Increasing the number of objects analyzed minimizes statistical errors but systematic errors linger. A catalog derived from realistic N-body simulation has known quantities like cluster masses for comparison. Hence, it is valuable in finding and minimizing systematic errors in research pipelines. The objective iv of this project is to develop a mechanism to generate a lensing and source catalog for LSST from simulated data using a range of computational procedures. The catalogs and mechanisms developed here can be used in conjunction or independently for various cosmological studies within or outside the main research pipeline of LSST project.
