Using Design Knowledge To Tell Story

Abstract Details

2022, MFA, Kent State University, College of Communication and Information / School of Visual Communication Design.
As creative fields become more and more multi-disciplinary, so to, is the field of storytelling. Writers are becoming film directors; comic artists are not only illustrating other writers’ books but are writing their own. This thesis touches on how the fundamentals, elements, and processes of fiction writing and graphic design can be juxtaposed to create or analyze story. While writers use visuals to structure stories, this thesis takes that process a step further, incorporating design principles and thinking into the writing process to deconstruct, analyze, and influence story. By designing visuals for stories, written or yet to be written, authors get a new perspective or approach to their writing. This process proved beneficial for authors but is nebulous—how one uses design to create a story is highly individualistic and malleable. None the less, authors are using visuals in their writing process and with a design education could use design principles to create visuals with meaning, representation, and purpose—visuals that are more than just a framework for content.
