The Effect of Surface Coating and Free End Condition on The Bond Behavior of GFRP Bars Embedded in Concrete

Cope, Charles Tucker, III

Abstract Details

2023, Master of Sciences, Case Western Reserve University, Civil Engineering.
Pullout tests on glass fiber-reinforced polymer bar embedded in concrete were performed in accordance with ASTM D7913 [1]. Bars with a nominal diameter of 13 mm (#4) were tested. The bonded length ranged from 5 to 20 times the bar diameter. Specimens were tested with two free end conditions. Those with bar protruding from the bottom (free end) of concrete, and those with bar cut flush with the concrete. The different load responses and peak loads seen indicate that the use of ASTM D7913 [1] to establish a required bond strength for the FRP bars requires further discussion in the research community. Additional tests were performed on concrete slabs reinforced with GFRP bar, serviceability limit states need further discussion to address the crack opening and deflection seen in the slabs reinforced with GFRP.
