Ghosts of Colonial Pasts: Encounters in Adaptations of Antigone and Medea in the Second Half of the Twentieth Century in Brazil and Argentina

Abstract Details

2022, Doctor of Philosophy, Ohio State University, Portuguese.
This dissertation focuses on six adaptations of the classical Greek plays Antigone and Medea in Argentina and Brazil during the second half of the twentieth century: Antígona Vélez (1951) by Leopoldo Marechal, La frontera (1960) by David Cureses, Pedreira das Almas (1958) by Jorge Andrade, Além do Rio (Medea) (1961) by Agostinho Olavo, Gota d’Água (1975) by Chico Buarque and Paulo Pontes, and Antígona furiosa (1986) by Griselda Gambaro. I draw from the work of Enrique Dussel, Walter Mignolo, Lélia Gonzalez, María Lugones, and others to argue that these plays appropriate Eurocentric discourses to emancipate South American ones and thus challenge continued practices of coloniality. In all the case studies that follow, to varying degrees, Eurocentric hegemonic discourses haunt the adaptations, leading to encounters with the colonial past that demand our ethical engagement. The adaptations’ relationship to the Greek texts is influenced by their contexts of production and, as such, they re-signify their respective sources. I aim to avoid any hierarchy between the South American plays and their Greek counterparts. In the six case studies, I explore how racism, economic exploitation, and control over land and labor are crucial to their dramatic conflicts.
