Abstract Details

2011, Master of Arts, Case Western Reserve University, Psychology.
The present study is a follow-up to a previous study designed to assess the effectiveness of a play intervention for children in kindergarten through fourth grade. The present study examined the concurrent relationships among play skills, subjective well-being as conceptualized as positive affect and life satisfaction, and coping ability, in addition to exploring the stability and predictive power of play over an eighteen-months period. Results yielded several important findings. As hypothesized, the frequency affect in play was significantly, positively related to self-ratings of positive mood. Concurrently, organization and imagination in play were significantly correlated with effective coping responses. Additionally, imagination in play was significantly related to the frequency of effective coping responses over an eighteen-month period. Results also support the stability of organization and imagination in play over an eighteen-month period. The clinical implications and limitations of this study are addressed.
