Abstract
Level density studies have very important applications in nuclear astrophysics, production cross sections of radioactive isotopes, nuclear fission, and nuclear medicine. We studied level densities from the particle evaporation of compound nuclei of mass numbers 61, 64 and 65. These were from Lithium induced reactions carried out at the Edwards Accelerator Laboratory, Athens, Ohio. We obtained level density information on 57Fe, 60Co, 61Co, 61Ni, 61Cu, 63Ni, 64Ni, 64Cu, and 64Zn. We also studied level densities from the evaporation of compound nuclei with mass numbers 82 by populating excited energy levels with gamma rays. These experiments were carried out at the Wright Nuclear Structure Laboratory, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut. We obtained level density information on 74Se, 76Se, 76Kr, 78Kr and 80Sr. Finally, using the data we obtained, we were able to show that the level density parameter decreases as we move away from the nuclear stability line.
