The d(γ,π0p), d(γ,π0n) and HD (γ,π0)X reactions were studied with linearly polarized γ-rays between 240 and 405 MeV from the Laser Electron Gamma Source (LEGS) facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The channels were separated in reactions on a deuteron and hydrogen target (solid HD) by detecting both π0-decay photons and recoil nucleons. The beam energy was determined by electron tagging, thus reducing energy-dependent systematic errors. This work provides the first beam asymmetry data for d(γ,π0n ) reaction. Cross sections for this channel significantly add to the very sparce database of previous measurements. The measured polarization observables can be used for a new multipole analysis that will serve as a further constraint to the theory of pion production. The results show that the beam asymmetry in π0 production from deuterium is close to the simple quasi-free expectation of weakly bound nucleons. In contrast, the measured cross sections for the bound neutron are much lower than predicted for the “free” neutron by current multipole analysis. The cross sections for the inclusive channel d(γ,π0)X are in fair agreement with previous measurements.
