Abstract
The purpose of this report is to describe my internship experience with the Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge working as a biological technician for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Fairbanks, Alaska from May to December 2010. Kanuti National Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge in Interior Alaska that was set aside to conserve fish and wildlife populations and their habitat. The Refuge provides important habitat for migrating waterfowl, and is a pristine example of boreal forest ecology. The focus of my internship was to assist the lead wildlife biologist in conducting a vegetation inventory and monitoring study that has been ongoing on the Refuge since 2004. This report discusses work pertaining to that focus, as well as the many other activities, experiences, and opportunities I had during my term with the Service. I spent part of the 2010 summer field season in remote study areas, participated in wildlife surveys, input data from a variety of studies, and participated in public outreach. This report also provides some description of arctic and sub-arctic ecology, discusses the genesis and goals of the National Wildlife Refuge System, and explains natural resource management in Alaska as a means of providing context for my experiences and the lessons I learned while working for the Service.
