Abstract

The purpose of this study was to gain further insight into what young female caregivers of persons with stroke were talking about on a web-based discussion group in the first year of caring. Narrative email discussion data were gathered as part of a larger study on the experience of caring. The sample for a secondary analysis of these data included three wives who were primary caregivers for their husbands. Researchers clustered these narrative data (entries = 214) into codes using Friedemann’s framework of systemic organization. Data were further analyzed by this investigator allowing themes to emerge and drawing them to the framework’s process dimensions of system maintenance and coherence, as well as congruence. There were four themes: giving and receiving supporting, being social, preserving family, and becoming frustrated. The findings from this study provide nurses with information about what was important to these female caregivers. Advanced practice nurses can incorporate strategies into the plan of care based on this information.
