Abstract

This work consists of a series of twenty-four images exploring the modern messages implicit in well-known landmarks. Our world, every day, tells us a story of its past. We experience our environment relative to this knowledge of its history, and we instinctively translate this past into a message relevant to our lives, today. This work seeks to interpret these modern messages through fashion, which, at its core, has always been about telling a story through design. Each model was dressed in an ensemble that seeks to explore a message, then placed into the photograph of the landmark from which the message sprang. In this way, the model and the message become intrinsically tied to the location itself to illustrate the way in which we, as visitors, experience it. The photographs invite the viewer to understand what they see in terms of what they have learned and translate why certain landmarks have become crucial cultural symbols in their own right.
