Abstract
Dimension, an exhibition of my thesis work, explores experimental painting by taking the paint off the canvas and away from traditional ideas of composition and materials. In these works I manipulate mass produced consumable products that get used in daily contemporary activities through accumulation, sewing, knotting and sticking to create the painting structure. The materials are familiar and comfortable to me while reflecting my place in history and my understanding of it. The inherent physical qualities of paint such as color, type and viscosity are important elements that I explore to define the works as paintings. The paint encases the object and also acts as the glue holding the objects together. In line with my material choices, I use artist acrylic paint along with common interior house paint for the plastic quality of their finishes and contemporary timeframe. The bright artificial colors as well as materials keep the work fun by embracing play, discovery and possibility.
