The Benefits of Implementing Issue Centered Social Studies Instruction with High School Students

Abstract
Ninety-six eleventh and twelfth grade students enrolled in a rural Midwest school participated in the study. The purpose of the study was to investigate and implement issue centered social studies instruction in benefits in retention as measured through test scores. Two unit tests were given prior to the implementation of issue centered social studies instruction and these scores were compared to a unit which was conducted utilizing issue centered social studies. As a result of the implementation of issue centered social studies instruction, scores increased on the tests, particularly on the essay portion of the test.
