▼ The trauma endured by children entering foster care can be horrific. The child often works diligently to recover from the abuse and neglect that he or she has endured. The pain that the child experiences through the healing process may hamper the recovery. The child may resolve or identify issues by using art to lessen the burden and pain he may hold within himself. Art therapy as part of a treatment team approach with a child who has many needs, such as a foster child, is usually welcomed by the child, and can be very effective as part of an overall treatment plan.

▼ The literature on art therapy in schools is sparse and research to support it's growth is necessary. The purpose of this mixed methods research study was to explore the development and implementation of an art therapy program in an elementary school setting in order to expand upon the current literature. The American School Counselor Association has stated that academic achievement is intricately connected to students social and emotional standards of development, yet little information exists on art therapy programs that enhance these developmental standards and ultimately promote academic success. The significance of this study was to discover how art therapy programs could be developed and implemented in an effort to promote the developmental standards expected of students in order to achieve academically. The study resulted in the development of a workbook for elementary art therapy programs and contributes to future development of art therapy programs in elementary schools.

▼ This study explores the role of art therapy and spirituality in the healing process of asixteen-year-old female who experienced acquaintance rape. Utilizing choices and expressive images in art therapy, the research aimed to contribute to a deeper understanding of the invasive impact of sexual assault and the resilience of the human spirit. Adolescence is one of the most challenging transitions in life, moving from childhood to adulthood can be confusing creating issues concerning self-identity, sexual identity, physical appearance, social status, and acceptance. For this adolescent experiencing sexual assault during this stage of maturation was confusing, painful, and disturbing. Feeling isolated and misunderstood, she retreated behind a façade of masked feelings and controlled responses. This case study follows the young woman through 15 sessions of art therapy that incorporated creative and spiritual expression. The Belief Art Therapy Assessment initiated dialogue regarding spirituality and religion helping this adolescent to clarify her own spiritual beliefs and consequently find strength and meaning in her life.

▼ The transition into adoption can be exciting and stressful for children. This transition, overlooked by the literature, may predict post-finalization success within adoptive families. Older child adoptees face unique challenges in developing complete selves, managing emotions, and attaching to new families. This can be particularly difficult when children suffer behavioral and emotional issues from attachment disorders and maintain expectations about being disrupted from these families due to personal experience. Art therapy can provide adoptees opportunities for self expression, behavioral management, and rapport/ trust development while demonstrating to the family the adoptees' willingness to participate. This case folows 16 art therapy sessions with a set of four children. Each adoptee was brought over from Russian orphanages by adoptive families. These children were disrupted by at least one adoptive family, were chosen to be adopted by the same family within two years, and were all diagnosed with reactive attachment disorder (RAD.)

▼ Bereavement camps are a method of help in the grieving process for children who have experienced a loss through death. The purpose of this study is to assess three different bereavement camps and their use of expressive therapies. A goal of the camps is to normalize the grieving process through education and to provide an opportunity to meet other children who have also experienced a loss. In addition, the camps provide interventions through art, music, and play that allow the children to express and cope with their feelings associated with grief and find an avenue to memorialize the loved one. The structure of the camps and the use of the expressive therapies are measured by evaluations of those involved with the camps.

▼ This grounded theory investigates whether those recovering from drug or alcohol addiction in a 90 day treatment center will benefit from group art therapy that focuses on completion of the first three steps of A.A., a primary goal of this facility as well as one of the most common treatment methods in the United States for drug and alcohol addiction. Members were asked to create art work using a different media (collage, drawing, clay and painting) for each session which corresponded to the first Three Steps of A.A., for a total of twelve sessions. Concepts of powerlessness, belief in a Higher Power, and turning their will and their lives over to a Higher Power were explored and important themes, insights, self-awareness and spirituality were discovered as well as preferences for the various media offered. Though the steps were an important topic of conversation as it related to clients artwork, the exciting element of study came through their engagement with the image created and how it mirrored where they were in the recovery process.

▼ The current research regarding the usefulness of art therapy interventions with bipolar disordered adolescents is limited. This case study examines the efficacy of art therapy interventions with a 13-year-old African American male client. At the time the case study was conducted, the subject was a client in a residential treatment facility for emotionally and behaviorally troubled adolescents. The results of the case study indicated that art therapy enabled this particular client, who was normally treatment resistant, to cultivate a therapeutic relationship with the art therapist and visually explore his feelings even when he was unable to verbalize them. The art therapy sessions also allowed the art therapist to identify oncoming cycles of mania through the client's responses to both the art therapist and the the various art interventions. Finally, the art therapist also discovered that this client became engaged towards therapeutic art tasks that reflected his hobbies and interests.

▼ This case study illustrates the therapeutic alliance of a man with schizophrenia and an Art Therapy and Counseling student who also has schizophrenia. Although the diagnoses are similar, and their journeys in their recovery have taken similar paths, there are major differences. The most noticeable difference is the degree of anhedonia, or the inability to seek pleasure in the client. Furthermore, the study also explores having an addiction along with schizophrenia, a dual-diagnosis. The therapeutic alliance began two years prior to the study, when the student was completing an internship at a non-profit family based social work organization, where he had also been employed for the previous fourteen years. Both the student and the person involved in the study were clients of the organization. The artwork contained within the study had a dual role. First, the art facilitates the insight into the illness, schizophrenia, and the recovery process. Secondly, the art therapy is a factor in the actual recovery.

▼ Art therapy has been used in the treatment of chemical dependency for many years. A large percentage of women in treatment are dually diagnosed with a serious mental illness. Current research also shows an increasing link between trauma and chemical dependency. Many art therapy interventions, along with various mental health programs, focus on either the treatment goals for addiction or the treatment goals for trauma. This case study identifies which art therapy interventions might best combine these treatment goals within the same program. It also examines how unresolved trauma may affect the recovery process. The art therapy interventions took place over a period of seven months with dually diagnosed women at a residential treatment center.

▼ The use of art therapy was investigated as a means of determining the effectiveness as a counseling modality with pre-adolescent girls in a partial hospitalization, summer day camp program. Effectiveness was determined through a variety of methods including direct interviews with the clients, interviews with various staff members, a comparison of behaviors exhibited on art therapy days with days where art therapy was not utilized, and an examination of verbal responses for introspective reflection as a result of completing the art task. On every level, the use of art therapy produced a positive effect on the participants. The program was designed to provide therapeutic interventions to girls, ages 9 through 12, who have been referred to the program for assistance with behavioral problems, socialization skills, and self-awareness/self-esteem. Art therapy had not been previously utilized in this program.

▼ The lives of today's youth are so influenced by technology that many believe they are rapidly disconnecting from nature and its benefits. This grounded theory research explores meaningful interactions within a natural setting, environmental art, and the use of digital photography with adolescents. Data was gathered from questionnaires, personal process reflections, and the researcher's observations and interactions with the participants. Resources supporting the basis for this research were derived from environmental art, ecopsychology research, and ancient cultural wisdom. Conclusions from this study indicate that through the use of environmental art and photography, adolescents can reconnect with a natural environment. Through their active participation within a natural setting, they can enhance well-being, raise awareness regarding ecological commitment, enhance self-awareness, and recognize the power of place.

▼ Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) has been named the signature injury of the war in Iraq. Following injury, cognitive-communication disabilities may go unseen in TBI patients because of good verbal communication. Art therapy utilizes non-verbal communication and therefore may be helpful in recognizing these cognitive disabilities. This study uses a mixed method approach to show that verbal functional communication skills in TBI patients may be high even when cognitive-communication skills are low. Thirty TBI patients on a locked brain injury rehabilitation unit of a full service hospital were interviewed and asked to complete an art intervention. Verbal communication and non-verbal cognitive-communication in TBI patients were examined using a functional communicationscale (FCS) and a cognitive-communication art therapy scale (CCATS). The results revealed that TBI patients scored high on the FCS even when they scored low on the CCATS. This study asserts that art therapy can be used to find cognitive-communication disabilities in TBI patients.

▼ This mixed methods research study examined the use of art therapy counseling with at-risk children in a private inner city school setting. The participants in this study attended 12 individual art therapy counseling sessions with an art therapy counseling student. Each participant, parent or guardian, and teacher was given pre and post-art therapy counseling surveys which were used to determine the effectiveness of the art therapy counseling sessions. A mixture of art making and psychotherapy was used with each participant and also used to evaluate the sessions. The individual sessions gave the participants a chance to build a therapeutic relationship with an adult. The numerical data collected in this study is of limited statistical significance; however the qualitative data collected demonstrates the need that children have for undivided positive attention from trusted adults.

▼ Autism is a developmental disorder that negatively affects a person's ability to communicate verbally, nonverbally and gesturally and inhibits their capability of imaginative self-play (Whetherby, 2006). The purpose of this study was to work with children and adolescents with autism using various art therapy interventions to discover which techniques improved self expression as well as communication skills and abilities. This study was done in a 5 week summer camp setting with children and adolescents who varied in their placement on the autism spectrum and had a wide range of functioning abilities. These interventions included many different variations of media and were designed to incorporate each of the camp's weekly themes while still attempting to evoke the most self expression as possible from the clients. Many interventions were found to improve self expression, communication, and production of original artwork while allowing for alterations to be made to accommodate clients with sensory aversions and varied amounts of functioning.

▼ This thesis project came about because of my own experience with and reverence for the art form of mandalas combined with my belief in the healing power of supportive communities of women. I was convinced that a communal opportunity of creating mandalas would deepen an individual's self-awareness which can only enhance any group experience. An invitation was presented to three groups of women who know some level of marginalization in our society. These women were all members of existing, larger groups which had already intentionally come together for support. All three groups were guided through five original mandala-making experiences adapted from basic art therapy techniques. These centering, prayerful experiences were embraced by all who participated. The result was that each group was changed. Within them, new alliances were created and existing relationships were strengthened.

▼ Maasai girls in Kenya are sent to boarding schools to escape unfair expectations, female circumcision and early marriage, or are rescued from broken homes and early traumatic experiences due to extreme abuse, poverty, or neglect. They have often lost parents to HIV/AIDS, addictions, or abandonment. Once at school, their self-worth and esteem barely exist. They carry great shame and intense worry being separated from their families, have immense self-doubt concerning a positive future, carry fear from their sex in a gender-biased society, and feel lost having no sense of belonging. They steal from and mistreat each other, their teachers are strict and demeaning, and they come from backgrounds not safe enough to call home. Through individual art therapy sessions, these girls were given a voice and opportunity to be appreciated, accepted, and nurtured. They were able to ventilate their feelings in a safe and age-appropriate way, cope with stress, and develop a positive self-image. Their art empowered them to be able to forgive their pasts, cherish the present, and strive to create meaningful futures.

▼ This case study explores the benefits of group art therapy during 15 oneand a half-hour weekly sessions in a nursing home. The participants, all from middle class backgrounds, were Caucasian females with the exception of one African American male. Ranging in age from 72-95, all faced a variety of physical and cognitive challenges. In an effort to give all the participants a meaningful experience, the art as therapy approach presented a broad scope of art materials and skill level tasks. These well-received sessions focused on socialization, enhancing self-esteem, reminiscing, and creative decision making, while reinforcing manual and visual dexterity. A review of literature that discussed geriatric art therapy research, conclusions, recommendations and proposed future research are included. This case study determines that art therapy with the geriatric population has great promise as an alternative complementary therapy, worthy of further study and continued practice.
