▼ The work consists of two contrasting panels. The first panel reflects life; the second, death. While grieving over the recent death of someone in my life, I sketched two separate formal shapes that would eventually become the basis of “Reflections.” The resulting music adheres to the shapes that I sketched. This piece, in which I integrated elements of minimalism, jazz, progressive rock, and sound mass composition, is scored for saxophone quartet (alto, alto, tenor, baritone), and amplified acoustic guitar. In addition to this version, there is an alternate version of this piece, which is scored for horn quartet and amplified acoustic guitar.

▼ During the second half of the nineteenth century, the symphonic poem thrived because it satisfied the key aspirations of its time: to relate music to the outside world and to integrate multi-movement forms, thus elevating instrumental program music to its highest level. Therefore, it became the apex of music, and composers chose it as the genre for some of the most important works of the period. However, due to an increased preference for musical abstraction over extra-musical inspiration in symphonic works, it quickly fell out of favor in the 1920s. Nevertheless, the ideals that led to the genre's displacement can be replaced with a twenty-first century aesthetic by updating the subject matter, returning to the multi-movement symphonic form, and ultimately reintegrating extra-musical inspiration and expressiveness in music. My dissertation updates the symphonic poem in this way by splitting the single-movement form and by simultaneously evoking emotion and current images from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon incident through satiric narration.

▼ In many ways, the Concerto for Piano and Wind Ensemble reflects my experiences at the University of Cincinnati. Composed mainly during the first four months of 2011, and originally intended as a summary of the various compositional techniques honed during my doctoral studies, the work also gained a programmatic element, seemingly without any conscious effort on my part. Although the concerto is in one continuous movement, it is divided into three main sections, each alluding to my state of mind during my three years as a full-time student at UC. Approximately 27 minutes in duration, this is my largest composition so far.

▼ The title, ‘Miles of Gold,’ was inspired by the idea of driving through a cornfield—the imagery of passing cornstalks, vivid greens and golds, and the endless scenery that is beautiful and delicate while seeming to never change. Just as a cornfield is about one huge, connected entity that contains many small elements, or a machine, which functions through the use of interlocking parts, the piece operates through the repetition and displacement of simple motivic fragments, which aim to bring out varying colors of the orchestra. The piece was commissioned by the Akron Youth Symphony under the direction of Christopher James Lees and was premiered on May 2, 2010.

▼ Sonata for Piano is a 15-minute 3-movement work for solo piano that represents much of the technical and artistic development I’ve made in acoustic composition while at CCM. While each movement has different energy and character, the work is united by a dense, diatonic harmonic language, naïve melodies, and a peaceful indifference toward dissonance. Structurally, the keys of C Major and F# Major take on tonic and dominant roles, respectively. The piece draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including ragtime, piano sonatas of the classical period, and modern choral repertoire.

▼ The working title for An Uncertain Machine was Fear of Input. At the core of the work lies a lumbering sequence of dense sonorities, which are meant to represent the vast amount of environmental data we receive from our senses every day. Somehow our brains have learned to filter out much of this deluge in order that we all might live functional, albeit unaware, lives. The music begins with a highly stripped down version of these sonorities and as the piece progresses towards its core, more and more notes are added until the full contents of the original generative sounds are heard. These are ruminated upon for an extended period. The listener is then whisked away in pseudo-retrograde, back to the original opening material, now more poignant for the sense of what has been lost. Much of this was inspired by watching my baby daughter first become aware of, and then learn how to function in her new environment. The following narrative occurs to me: A small bipedal robot, completely unexposed to nature and the outside world, mysteriously finds itself on a path at the entrance to a large forest. As it journeys further in the growth becomes more dense and tangled, the forest sounds more numerous and strange. Finally at the center of the forest the growth is so dense it nearly overwhelms our friend. He journeys backwards in his mind to the beginning of his trek and finds himself at peace right where he is.

▼ Metropolitan is a piece that was inspired by the multitude of life inherent to every city. A huge variety of people, from all walks of life come together, now united by proximity. The result is a completely unique experience that breeds collaboration for the inspired, ambition for the eager, danger in the masses, beauty in the diversity, coldness in the operation, power in the structure, and everything in between. ▼ Perihelion is an example of post modern eclecticism in that within this singular piece, multiple genres come together to form a unified entity. Elements such as minimalism, post minimalism, post-rock, progressive rock, and avant-garde converge to form a whole. The exploration of the Moog electric guitar, an instrument which can sustain pitches infinitely, adds to the progressive rock feel of the piece, which is already constantly shifting from duple to triple meter, much like many progressive rock groups. The implementation of radios and television sets allots an experimental edge to this piece and verges on avant-gardism in it's approach to using noise-generating objects to project sound into a musical space otherwise dominated by traditional musical instruments. The main inspiration for this piece is the astronomical event of an actual perihelion, which is when, in the earth's orbit around the sun, there is the least amount of distance between the earth and the sun. This event is treated metaphorically within the piece and is represented through the music; the final zenith nearing the end of the piece represents the final apotheosis, and thereafter, the listener gradually drifts away from the point at which they were closest to the sun as they will ever get, then back into orbit, going farther away from the sun until the next annual occurrence of the perihelion.

▼ Spring Grove was inspired by my wanderings around the Spring Grove Cemetery. Never having spent much time in a cemetery previous to Spring Grove, I was struck by the surreal beauty of the place, but more so by its treatment from the visiting populace. In addition to visiting deceased loved ones, visitors would come by for its walking trails, to admire nature, and even to take family portraits among the mausoleums. Amid the bustling life, I could not deny that, as should be the case among the dead, there was a pervading sense of peace.

▼ Iroha, composed by Kazuaki Shiota, is a composition for dance and Human Motion Wind Chimes. The goal is to explore the interdisciplinary collaboration between music and dance with technology. The name of the composition is derived from the Japanese traditional poem, Iroha, which is attributed to Buddhism and consists of a perfect pangram. The structure for the choreography of this composition, choreographed by Karen Wissel, follows the word order of the poem, in which the phrases of choreography were created based on the shapes or meanings of the 47 Japanese syllabaries. Human Motion Wind Chimes is a software-based interactive sound system that Shiota created for making a sonic environment in which dancers’ movements, captured by cameras, trigger various kinds of sounds. Each measure in the score, containing the sound parameters of Human Motion Wind Chimes, directly corresponds to each phrase of choreography.

▼ The use of digital audio artifacts, intrinsic elements of some digital signal processes and once considered unwanted byproducts of the composition process, provide computer music composers with a rich palette of sounds. This document will detail the author's own explorations within this aesthetic, resulting in the fixed-format work kernel_panic. Approaches to the creation of digital audio artifacts will be discussed in detail. Pertinent figures and source code will be included, aiding in the descriptions of software and generative audio algorithms utilized for source material in the music. Moreover, discussions relating to the aesthetics of working with digital audio artifacts as a creative means will be explored, demonstrating the inevitability of these elements in modern computer music.

▼ “wood, metal, and vibrating air” is a two movement work for piano duo. Its title comes from Los Angeles writer, Kenneth Miller, who wrote, “The piano is an intricate machine composed of many simple machines, able to communicate the subtlest of universal truths by means of wood, metal, and vibrating air.” This work serves as a celebration of the piano itself, with each movement reflecting on a different aspect of the instrument’s unique history and sound. The first movement is inspired by the vast array of piano manufacturers. The pitch material of each main gesture was determined by serializing the brand names of keyboard manufacturers. In this way, the movement serves as an homage to the instrument itself and the craftsmen who build it. The second movement is an exploration of the iconic sonority that opens the Beatles’ tune “A Hard Day’s Night”. A comprehensive 2004 study by computer scientist and mathematician Dr. Jason Brown determined that the secret to that elusive chord was, in fact, the addition of a few crucial pitches on the piano, played by Beatles manager George Martin. This inspired me to compose a movement devoted to living inside that beautiful sonority and exploring its endless facets.

▼ This document consists of three-musical landscapes totaling seventeen minutes in length. The music is written for a combination of mezzo-soprano, Bb clarinet, percussion and tape. One distinguishing characteristic of this music, apart from an improvisational quality, involves habituating the listener through consistent dynamics; the result is a timbrally-diverse droning. Overall, pops, clicks, drones, and resonances converge into a direct channel of aural noise. One of the most unique characteristics of visual art is the strong link between process and esthetic outcome. The variety of ways to implement a result is astounding. The musical landscapes in this document are the result of an interest in varying my processes; particularly, moving mostly away from pen and manuscript to the sequencer. The term "exhibition" implies that consideration be given to how subsequent performances of this work are presented. I conceived these movements in the order they are presented in this document; however, just as any visual artist might base her exhibit on context, the same principle can be followed with this music. Each landscape can be selectively presented. The scores contained within are labeled as such: (1)Williams Mix 2, (2)Automatic Story Telling, (3)Familiar. The tape parts are available upon request from the author.

▼ The inspiration for the … After … is taken from the short story collection After the Quake, by Japanese author Haruki Murakami. The stories were written in response to Japan's 1995 Kobe earthquake, and each story is affected peripherally by the disaster. Translator Jay Rubin says of the collection, "The central characters in After the Quake live far from the physical devastation, which they witness only on TV or in the papers, but for each of them the massive destruction unleashed by the earth itself becomes a turning point in their lives. They are forced to confront an emptiness they have borne inside them for years." Murakami’s work made me consider the concept of life and death and the purpose of our life. The rapid swings of a seismograph’s ink pen reflect a mysterious shaking force that rocks the earth with uncertain changes. I want to commemorate the children who passed away during the earthquakes that happened in many places recently.
