▼ Children’s media is a multi-billion dollar global industry that no only entertains, but shapes the development of children. With the advent of technologies such as the Internet and personal electronic devices, the children’s media landscape is changing and growing rapidly. The purpose of this work is to examine the modern business apparatus that surrounds the children’s entertainment industry. This will be accomplished by examining existing companies and their practices as well as an overview of children’s media practices. This will finally be synthesized into a real world example of the development process of a children’s animated show I created. Beneath the cape and cowl: Batman and the revitalization of comic book films.

▼ Comic book superheroes have been a part of the media landscape for decades now, from Depression-era comics to brightly colored television shows of the 1960s to the brooding graphic novels of the 1980s. Walking a fine line between escapist fun and serious social commentary, superheroes have captured the minds of readers young and old, none more so than the Dark Knight of Gotham City - the Batman. Batman has been at the backbone of the genre from its outset and continues to be as superhero movies become more important to Hollywood, in terms of content, characterization and capital gain. This paper traces the history of Batman's crossover from page to screen to see how his character has changed over time, what themes have remained central to his story and how each filmmaker has told the same story time and again while still making it fresh and "original." First, this research studies the different research methods that have been used to analyze superheroes and comic books in the past. Next, this study compares and contrasts some of the most important Batman comics and films to find what elements make the character so appealing to a mass audience. This research includes analysis and comparisons of the films Batman, Batman Begins , and The Dark Knight, as well as several well-known graphic novels like The Long Halloween, The Dark Knight Returns and Batman: Year One. Finally, this paper shows how Batman has affected other works in the comic book movie genre, particularly the adaptation of the seminal graphic novel Watchmen.

Lifesigns: Successful Storytelling in Open-World Games.

▼ Due to their unique capability to be altered by those experiencing them, games have the potential to tell a more immersive story and evoke a stronger emotional response than traditional entertainment media. Moreover, it is in the nature of open world games to facilitate the most personal and immersive gameplay and narrative experience. Admittedly, sacrifices have to be made on both sides in order for the best match of gameplay and narrative to be found. By studying the shortcomings of other sandbox games, and carefully balancing modular developer controlled content with player freedom, or at least the appearance of player freedom, this potential can be attained.

▼ This thesis focuses on how three specific documentary films could be used in high school and undergraduate classroom settings. More broadly, it uses feedback from a series of focus groups to discuss what role internationally focused documentaries may play in enhancing American students’ global awareness. While reports from organizations such as National Geographic showcase young American’s need for a broader understanding of the world, this research also discusses how ethnocentric teaching methods and increased use of standardized assessment impact global education in the United States. As the world grows more interconnected through globalization, I explore how developing a greater global conscious may be the next steps in a democratic education. In addition, this thesis looks at how documentary’s basis in storytelling and media may facilitate students’ understanding of international interdependency. Incorporating opinions from undergraduate and international graduate students, the thesis concludes with a realistic sense of incorporating films into high school and undergraduate classes. Although educators may face challenges in introducing controversial themes that are latent in most global issues, global education is not a need to be overlooked due to a lack of resources or support. While broadening students’ scope of their world may be facilitated through many different methods, documentaries could be utilized in a variety of ways to help peak students’ interest in global topics and help them consider solutions to the problems we face in a global age.

▼ Forensic audio analysis and audio restoration are two formerly obscure fields that are becoming increasingly important to society. Despite being daunting in name, both fields are actually just specialized forms of audio production – the same type of audio production taught in Ohio University's School of Media Arts and Studies. This thesis aims to illustrate how connected audio restoration and forensic audio analysis are and how those two fields relate to traditionally taught audio production. Furthermore this thesis will provide some of the social and pedagogical advantages to teaching forensic audio analysis and restoration at the undergraduate level as a component of a complete audio sequence, as well as offer an example of a complete course curriculum that can be used for such education.

▼ This thesis discusses why certain visual effects films stand the test of time, while others do not. Some films' effects become outdated very quickly, even within a year, regardless of how critically and popularly acclaimed they were upon their release. Yet others, like Jurassic Park, remain effective over a decade later. I analyzed 10 films, covering both "good" and "bad" effects films, as well as a wide variety of different types of effects films : Jurassic Park, Forrest Gump, The Day After Tomorrow, Transformers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Brokeback Mountain, The Bucket List, Children of Men, and War of the Worlds. Through my analysis, I discuss the importance of matchmoving, compositing, controlled scale of effects, as well as the role of cinematography in visual effects, and most importantly, the critical role of story. The thesis also includes a short history of special and visual effects, including the all-important Digital Revolution of effects films.
