▼ Desmognathus welteri Barbour was described, as a subspecies of D. fuscus, in 1950. A series of statements, by various authors, concerning D. fuscus of unusual size and coloration in and around Harlan County, Kentucky, preceded this description. In recent years, authors have begun treating welteri as a full species. No previously published evidence is available to warrant the new assignment. A complete review of the literature concerning D. welteri, regardless of the author's taxonomic assignment, is presented. Using a discriminant analysis of fifteen characters (various lengths, counts, shapes, and colors), analysis of patterns of ontogenetic change and sexual dimorphism in a series of additional characters (primary and secondary sexual characteristics, tooth numbers and shapes, and color patterns), and larval life history and morphology, evidence is presented to confirm the status of D. welteri as a full species. Comparisons for all characters are made with its two similar and sympatric congeners, fuscus and monticola, and some possible explanations of inter- and intraspecific variation are presented. D. welteri is more aquatic and attains a greater maximum size than either monticola or fuscus; fuscus is much smaller, monticola of similar size. Tail shape, the occurrence of dark and thickened toe tips, the occurrence of melanophores on the roof of the mouth, and ventral melanophore distribution are the best characters, other than size, for separation of the taxa. The larvae of welteri appear to spend an extra year in the water, transforming between 21 and 24 months post-hatching; both fuscus and monticola appear to transform 8 to 9 months post-hatching. All three species exhibit sexual dimorphism for size and numbers of maxillary, dentary, and vomerine teeth - all of which are age-specific characteristics. One other character, number of costal spaces between adpressed limbs, also age-specific, is sexually dimorphic in welteri and fuscus but not in monticola.
