Viewing the Long Take in Post-World War II Films: A Cognitive Approach.

▼ The goal of this thesis is to investigate the effect of long takes that appear in the films made after WWII. To demonstrate how these long takes provides the effects, this thesis employs two different approaches. The first approach synthesizes previous film studies' descriptions about three characteristics of long takes in post-WWII films. The second approach uses the discoveries from experimental psychology to discuss how spectators' attention functions while viewing these long takes. By comparing these two different approaches, this thesis also points out that cognitive film studies are valuable because they are able to illustrate the long-take viewing experience of spectators in general rather than only film scholars, who are the dominated voice in interpreting the effect of long takes in post-WWII films.

▼ This thesis examines the roles of gay black men in three HBO programs: Six Feet Under, The Wire, and True Blood. Whereas such characters have always been stereotyped and ridiculed in the past, HBO has made strides forward thanks to its commitment to being on the cutting edge of narrative television. Drawing on Jasbir Puar's Terrorist Assemblages, the thesis argues that Omar Little of The Wire, and to a lesser extent Lafayette Reynolds of True Blood, add new dimensions of representation by presenting their queerness as an assemblage of diverse factors, rather than an intersection of discrete categories. Keith Charles of Six Feet Under is presented as a counterexample - a positive representation, but safer and less groundbreaking than those who came after.

Direct-to-DVD: From Syfy to the Majors.

▼ The direct-to-DVD market is an understudied aspect of the film industry. By focusing on Syfy, as both exhibitor and financier of direct-to-DVD movies, and the Majors’ direct-to-DVD divisions, I will show how these two distinct systems interact with the home video market. Initially one would think that these two systems, Syfy with its ultra low budget action and horror movies and the Majors more typical direct-to-DVD fare, would be in competition with one another, however, this is not the case. The Majors are not attempting to edge out the mini studios by producing a glut of movies at the $1-2 million range; instead they leave that to mini studios and focus on fewer, bigger titles.

▼ This research mapped 175 audiovisual festivals that took place in South America in 2008 and analyzed them regarding the types of events they are, the place and time of the year they take place, what kind of films/videos they exhibit and the number of years that they have been happening. The research also compared the data with the population of each country, their GDP and number of internet users. The research also performed case studies of successful events and events that have been discontinued and compared their analysis in order to identify reasons and elements that can turn an audiovisual festival into a success or a failure.

Conflicting Views of Homosexuality Among the Mainstream Films and Gay "Pink" Films of Japan.

▼ This thesis will examine the representation of homosexuality in Japanese films through analyzing gay "pink" films, which are soft-core porn films exhibited in specialized theaters, alongside mainstream films featuring gay characters, to highlight ideological differences between the two. Each of the chapters will focus on a certain theme common to both the mainstream films and the gay "pink" films. The first chapter will be centered on gay characters' relations with the familial structure, the second chapter will examine the representation of homosexual desires in homosocial organizations, and the third chapter will analyze how the mainstream films foster female spectators' identification with gay characters, while the gay "pink" film excludes female identification. It will be argued that on the whole, the mainstream films suggest an assimilatory sexual politics, representing the inclusion of gay characters and the internalization of homosexuality within the hegemonic culture. The gay "pink" films offer an alternative representation of homosexuality, however, suggesting a separatist politics in part by excluding heterosexuals from the gay characters' private relationships.

▼ Between 1935 and 1941, the Jam Handy Organization in Detroit produced a series of 111 general-interest soft-sell advertising shorts for Chevrolet. Looking at a cross section of these films and other selections from Handy’s influential oeuvre, which varied in style from newsreels to cartoons to scientific demonstrations, I will analyze how they reflect dominant ideologies of industrial capitalism, how they function formally within discourses of advertising, and how they work to construct spectators as consumers. I contend that through these ephemeral films we may better understand the range of cultures and ideologies struggling for dominance during the Great Depression, as well as gain insights into the meaning of the 1930s with respect to its effects on the 1950s and beyond.
