▼ This study investigated the correlations between known predictors of juvenile sexual offending and the total number of incidents by offenders. Previous literature has examined individual and environmental factors thought to play a role in juvenile sexual offending, but it has often ignored the impact of these factors on one-time offenders versus repeat offenders. This study examines the relationships between these variables and the number of incidents through Spearman’s rho correlations. Results indicated that there are differences between one-time offenders and repeat offenders on individual and environmental factors, as well as on the characteristics of their victims.

The Sanctity of the Right to an Impartial Jury: An Examination of Racial Composition of Juries on Non-Capital Felony Case Outcomes.

▼ Due process of law requires actors in the criminal justice system to base their decisions on legal rather than extra-legal factors such as the race or sex of the defendant on case outcomes. The extent to which decisions are based on these extra-legal factors has been a common topic of research, especially regarding the effects race/ethnicity have on judges and juries’ verdicts. The results from such studies are mixed; some researchers claim that minority jurors are more likely to acquit the offender, while others argue that race does not have an adverse impact during jury deliberations. Many of the studies, however, use mock trials or focus on one specific crime, such as rape. Although these studies do make an important contribution, the results observed do not accurately portray what occurs in jury trials in the “real” world. The present study examines the significance of the racial composition of juries on non-capital felony case outcomes in four counties in the United States.

▼ Although the death penalty is deemed inhumane and ineffective by some scholars, it still exists in some countries. Among the retentionist countries, China is the leader with a wide range of capital offenses and large number of executions. The review of deterrence studies in the United States indicates that there is no consistent evidence for a deterrent effect. Russia and Singapore are similar to China in some aspects. However, the death penalty does not show deterrence for murders in Russia and the moratorium on executions is not responsible for the increase in the murder rate. The extensive use of the death penalty in Singapore does not show deterrence, either. The comparison between these countries to China, as well as the review of deterrence studies, suggests that China can abolish the death penalty from a deterrence standpoint.

▼ This study investigated the nature and degree of state level statutory regulation for private police and security guards with a specific intent to analyze arrest powers for these agents. Previous literature has examined statutory regulation, but has ignored any discussion of arrest powers for private law enforcement and security agents. A content analysis on applicable state laws explorers the type, nature, and degree of statutory regulation. Results indicate some measure of similarity among regulation between states. Only one state, Ohio, allows private police full arrest powers.

▼ This study examined the relationship between custodial grandmothers and juvenile delinquency. Previous literature has examined the physical health and emotional well-being of the caregivers. Little has been examined regarding the well-being of the juveniles who are placed in the care of a grandparent, however. This study examined the effect of custodial grandmothers on juvenile delinquency by identifying several predictor variables related to the caregiver, grandchild, and household. The statistical procedures of difference of means test and the one way analysis of variance (ANOVA) were used. The results indicated that full-time employed caregivers as well as caregivers who reported a religious affiliation cared for less delinquent juveniles. Additionally, older juveniles were found to engage in more delinquency.

▼ This study takes an organizational perspective to examine the adoption of research and planning units by 58 American municipal police departments. Two rival hypotheses are tested: 1) an organizational complexity hypothesis, 2) an environmental complexity hypothesis. T-test analysis supported the organizational complexity hypothesis and found that large, complex police organizations were more likely to have adopted a research and planning unit. The conclusion of this thesis discusses these findings, describes some problems with researching organizational innovation, and suggests remedies to these problems.

▼ Research related to juvenile prostitution has consistently highlighted risks factors such as runaway behavior, child abuse, and a broken home. There is reason to believe, however, that other less frequently studied variables might also contribute to the probability of involvement of adolescents in prostitution, namely, parental influences, such as their involvement in prosocial activities with children. This study used data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolecent Health (Add Health), Wave I, 1994-1995 from UNC to explore whether there was a relationship between parental involvement and levels of involvement in juvenile prostitution. To determine the significance of this relationship, a Spearman's rank correlation test and a multinomial logistics regression analyses were conducted. The independent variable was an average of the activities done by mom and dad (indicated by the juvenile), while the dependent variable consisted of three levels of involvement in juvenile prostitution (infrequent, occasional, and active). Several demographic variable (sex, race, and age) and behavioral variables (runaway behavior and lying to parents) were controlled in the analyses. As hypothesized, parental involvement was found to decrease the likelihood of respondents engaging in juvenile prostitution. Juveniles who were less likely to be actively involved in prostitution were more likely to be female, nonwhite, had parents doing more activities with them, and were less likely to run away, in comparison to juveniles who were actively involved in prostitution.

▼ Sexual assault in correctional institutions is a serious problem that has recently secured the attention of national lawmakers. This manuscript explains the unique nature and characteristics of prison rape, as well as the various efforts that have been put forth to prevent its occurrence. The Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 was adopted in order to build new knowledge about prison rape and mandate more effective prevention efforts. The requirements of Prison Rape Elimination Act of 2003 are detailed and an assessment of the potential effects of the legislation will be presented. It is estimated that the largest impact of PREA may be the new knowledge gathered on prison rape, while improvements in prevention efforts may be minimal and require more time to be noticeable.

▼ Scholars have long been interested in the study of corporate crime. The current financial crisis caused by widespread defaults on sub-prime mortgages brings a renewed call for understanding the significant harms produced by reckless corporate practices. This thesis utilizes a multiple case study approach to examine four major corporate scandals throughout American history. These cases include Cooke & Co. and Northern Pacific Railroad in the 1870s, the Insull utility holding companies in the 1930s, the Savings and Loan crisis of the 1980s, and the Enron scandal in 2001. A macro-social adaptation of Sherman's (1978) examination of corrupt police organizations is used as a logical model to analyze the cases using cross-case synthesis. The four cases are compared using the framework to uncover common patterns of reactions to major corporate crimes. The thesis concludes with a discussion of various policy alternatives for handling complex corporate crime problems, including a guide for future research.

▼ The scarcity of research on female police officers is a consequence of the low representation of women in the profession. Almost no research has focused on the perceptions, expectations, and beliefs of prospective female police officers. Participants in the current study included four female Criminal Justice students who reported plans to apply to police departments after graduation. In a focus group setting, participants responded to six research questions designed to elicit responses on their perceptions and expectations of police work. They were additionally questioned on perceptions regarding the realities of police work for female officers in particular. The findings are twofold: 1) Prospective female officers possess extensive knowledge about police work and the challenges encountered by policewomen, and 2) They have devised strategies that they believe will help them overcome these challenges in the future. Participants most commonly suggested that female police officers ought to utilize adaptive police behaviors, such as communication skills, on the street. As the focus group consisted of college-educated individuals who were each familiar with the law enforcement field, the findings suggest the importance of motivation and experience with respect to a prospective officer’s perceptions of police work. The findings further imply that prospective policewomen perceive that policewomen have unique responsibilities and provide specialized skills to the police force.

▼ The present study explores whether specific juvenile delinquency influences specific victimization experiences. The study utilizes cross-sectional survey data of self-reported delinquency and victimization from 7th to 12th grade students in a Midwestern county. The analysis utilizes multivariate stepwise linear regression techniques to explore the contributions of specific delinquency on specific victimization. Results indicate that juvenile participation in assault and theft behaviors is strongly related to victimization in a similar manner. Juvenile participation in other substance use is related to all forms of victimization while gang affiliation buffers all forms of victimization. It is concluded that there is clear relationship between the specific juvenile delinquency and subsequent victimization risk and that in-school prevention programming must more adequately address the victim/offender overlap to be most effective.
